Hemp Oil vs. CBD Oil: What’s The Difference?

While they are similar in some ways, there are important differences between hemp oil and CBD oil. As a consumer, it’s easy to get confused by phrases such as “cannabis oil” and “marijuana oil,” especially when many companies seem to use these terms interchangeably. Let’s take a closer look at hemp oil and CBD oil to learn how to distinguish the two.

What Is Hemp Oil?

Hemp oil is fabricated from the plant called hemp. In other words, it is a hemp extract taken from the seeds of the plant. While this type of oil can be extracted from all plants in the cannabis genus, industrial hemp is the only plant used for hemp oil. This type of hemp is specifically produced industrially and the amount of psychoactive substances that are contained in it is minimal.

Usages of Hemp Oil:

  • Hemp oil is great for cooking and a full of nutrients. It can provide a crispy and nutty taste to foods and can be a wonderful replacement for olive oil in salads.
  • It is a great natural moisturizer that can be used after a shower.
  • Hemp oil can be the base for different forms of plastic, instead of petroleum.
  • It is used in the production of paints that are more eco-friendly than petroleum-based paints.
  • It can be used as bio-diesel fuel, like other vegetable oils.
  • Hemp oil is used for making lotions, soaps and even some foods.

What Is CBD Oil?

CBD oil is the short form of the term cannabidiol oil. Cannabidiol is a natural component of industrial cannabis or hemp. CBD oil is cannabis oil that has a significant content of cannabidiol. It is made from the flowers, leaves and stalks of hemp and not from its seeds like hemp oil. CBD oil has become very popular in the medical marijuana industry, because it can be helpful in the treatment of various conditions without the typical intoxicating effects of marijuana use.

Usages of CBD Oil:

  • Can be used in the treatment of cancer .
  • It is used in the treatment of inflammatory disorders, anxiety, depression, seizures and neurodegenerative disorders.
  • Can be used in the treatment of epilepsy.

The Crucial Difference Between Hemp Oil and CBD Oil

Hemp and marijuana are cousins in the plant world, but marijuana has a much higher THC content than hemp. Hemp oil contains low levels of CBD – typically less than 25 parts per million – while CBD oil can be up to 15% CBD. Because the plants are related, some unscrupulous sellers of hemp oil are trying to market it for its medicinal value, which is negligible.

I want to make a lotion to help alleviate my psoriasis symptoms. And use CBD oil and maybe other additives. I now live in Arizona where it is legal (If you have State Id and medical card) I don’t have the ID card yet (Still looking for a permanent abode). I am thinking that I don’t want oil, but a tincture Where can I get it?

      Hi Mary,
I wanted to answer this because we’ve already experienced this first hand. My Mom has chronic arthritis pretty much all over her body along with a severe case of Psoraisis through out most of her body. We were desperate to get her relief for several years and finally tried edible Cannibis. Since my Mom is in her 80s this was not easy to convince her to do. But her arthritis and Psoraisis was getting worse we tried Cannibis and it soothed her pain of arthritis…this was our main focus was to find her some relief of arthritis pain…after 3-4 weeks of taking the edibles (we got chocolate forms of edibles) we also noticed her Psoraisis was slowly disappearing! It’s now been about 7 mos and she is about 90% improved of her CHRONIC PSORAISIS !!! We weren’t really concentrating on her Psoraisis as much as focused on helping her get some relief of her arthritis, but miraculously – we were able to relieve her with both diseases…
As her care taker, I would recommend that you take the edibles in small doses (or a dosage your comfortable with), rather than putting a cream on your skin. You really need to address Psoraisis internally first, then if you need to add cream. I can almost gaurantee you won’t need the creams. Just find yourself a good reputable dispensary to work with…hope this helps you, Jo

Hello. The article states that CBD Oil has medicinal properties and hemp oil is trying to get marketed as such, but that is misleading.

  • Everyone is asking where to get this and I don’t see any recommendations which is why I wanted to make one. I work for a company called Bluegrass Hemp Oil which specializes in cannabis strains containing very high CBD content and extremely low THC content. Our plants are bread specifically to produce a lot of CBD and we extract only from the bloom which is the most cannabinoid rich part of the plant. Yes it is technically considered hemp because the THC content is so low but this is a cannabis plant intended for its CBD production, not a plant intended for fiber or seed but marketed as CBD oil as this article mentions. Its a really top notch product and I chose to work here because of the life changing affects it had on a family member of mine with debilitating anxiety.

I am seeking other alternatives as the device my child was implanted with is not fully affective in controlling the myoclonic seizures.
My child has had 3 grand mal seizures this year. The first one was prior to implementation, and the other two were after the device was placed in.
I have seen many different name brands but I really don’t want to waste time experimenting with different types of oils or spend money only to find out they are not affective for meeting my child’s needs.
How can I determine which is the best in order to help my child with seizures and many other conditions such as~ ADHA, SPD, OCD, ODD,IED, ANXIETY DISORDER, SELECTIVE MUTISM, RSD, AUTISM ?
    Please advise

Have any of you actually noticed that you keep asking where to get it and from whom? Who ever wrote this had no intention of giving information other than the difference between Hemp and CBD. They likely don’t know where to get the real stuff and if they do, they are not telling you. Maybe because they don’t want to, or may not legally be able to do so. So if you see a hundred questions about where to get it and none have been answered, your inquiry is not likely going to be answered either. You are all wasting your time. Take time to stop and read others comments.

I posted a reply and it didn’t post so they don’t want anyone telling you where to go. On the SHOP link in small print beneath the “NON CANNABIS, COMING SOON, Blah Blah” it says that you can get cannabis products from here. When you go there, it sends you to another link to a website called Leafy. c o m. That site sells actual Marijuana. http://www.leafly.com/dispensary-info/chronic-therapy/ menu. You can’t use this link. It has spaces in it so it doesn’t look like a web site. You will have to copy it and paste it and take out the spaces.
