If you are like most Colorado pot tourists, you will find that recreational marijuana stores in in the state will sell to anyone over the age of 21, but there are relatively few places for you to legally smoke what you have bought.

Colorado pot tourism has brought a lot of money into the state, but Colorado’s constitution has an amendment that bans consumption on public property.
So what do you do if you don’t own private property in Colorado?

Right now, the hotels in Denver outlaw all smoking: both tobacco and marijuana. The city has already banned smoking dens, like those found in Amsterdam.

Marijuana advocates, though, say that banning smoking dens actually violates the spirit of legalization, because legalization was supposed to regulate marijuana as if it were alcohol.

Entrepreneurs are starting to exploit the lack of smoke bars by connecting tourists with private condos and hotels that will allow pot smoking.

And tourists should know that they cannot smoke outside, either. Denver recently banned smoking in all parks and streets – and on the 16th Street Mall, a popular spot for both locals and tourists.

The fines are as much as $999

Starting soon, though, Pueblo County, Colorado, retailers will be allowed to build smoking patios near their businesses. While the state has banned marijuana consumption on the premises of a licensed store, as long as the store operators don’t actually own the smoking area, they should be fine.
County commissioners believe that the smoking gardens could help the area’s image because marijuana is so popular with voters.

Smoking Cannabis in Denver

If you are coming to visit Denver and you’re interested in smoking marijuana, where can you go? There are actually a number of cannabis lounges, medication lounges, marijuana events and weed tours in Denver where you can smoke socially.

Colorado has been the front runner for cannabis lounges, so a vacation here will not disappoint.

Under the new laws, if you are over the age of 21, you can legally possess an ounce of marijuana in Colorado. In addition to buds, you can also purchase and enjoy other forms of marijuana, like edibles and concentrates.

The best part, for tourists, is that you don’t need to be a resident. There is no registration system, which means that adults have the right to possess and consume marijuana while they are in Colorado. Of course, you will need ID to prove that you are 21 years or older (like a driver’s license or passport).

Purchasing Limits

When you visit Denver, you are allowed to possess up to an ounce of marijuana, but as a non-resident, you are only allowed to purchase a quarter ounce in any one sales transaction. This means that most stores will only sell to you once a day. This law was created to stop visitors from stockpiling marijuana for export.

That being said, you can still mix and match what you buy (choosing flower, edibles, concentrate, etc.) as long as the total is equal to 7 grams or less.

Store Hours in Denver

In Denver, the cannabis stores are required to close by 7 p.m. Remember, a new DUI law is now in effect in Colorado. It sets the limit for the amount of active THC which can be in your system when you drive. The legal limit is 5 nanograms per milliliter of blood, so please keep this in mind when you visit.

Federal Lands in Colorado

The right to possess marijuana in Colorado does not extend to federal lands in the state, so don’t smoke in national parks or while at any other federal properties.

If you are found with marijuana on federal land you could receive up to a year in jail and a fine of $1,000 on your first offense.
